Academic Integrity Council & Faculty Mentors

During the fall of 2020, the Academic Integrity Council (AIC) was formed to address changes to the academic misconduct process and changes to the sanctioning guidelines.

The AIC identified a need to develop a faculty mentorship for Academic Misconduct program. This program is designed to assist in educating faculty regarding the academic misconduct process and the importance of reporting academic misconduct infractions appropriately and timely.

Program Purpose

The Academic Integrity Council acknowledges that many faculty members are unfamiliar with the process of reporting instances of suspected academic dishonesty committed by students. Faculty members also report hesitancy in filing a report for fear that the disciplinary repercussions may be harsher than they would have wanted for a student. Other faculty are hesitant to file a report because they wish to maintain control over their decision/finding.

The Council is concerned that these factors have resulted in an underreporting of academic integrity violations, and subsequent missed opportunities to correct students’ behaviors and teach the principles of academic integrity. Faculty Mentors for Academic Misconduct will assist faculty who desire to consult with a faculty mentor on the academic misconduct process and reporting.
