Oconee Language Lab

The mission of the Language Lab is to promote, enhance, and support language learning through the use of state-of-art language pedagogies and innovative technology.

The Language Lab supports language faculty and students by:
  • Facilitating and supporting the use of innovative technology-based instructional materials and language learning systems
  • Providing the assistance and training necessary to implement these materials and systems in language classes at the university
  • Providing on-site and web-based support

The primary role of the lab is to create an environment where students feel comfortable speaking the language they are learning, and where they can get the help they need in their journey to learn a second or third language. The lab is staffed with upper division language students and native speakers of the language that can help students with pronunciation, grammar, and their writing.

Hello Everyone! Your foreign language (1001 and 1002) classes are usually 4-credit-hour classes. Three of those four hours you complete in the classroom, the fourth hour you complete with us in the language lab. The labs usually involve pair work since we want you to practice your speaking skills.

Main things to remember about each lab:

  1. For most activities you have to work in pairs so find a partner quickly.
  2. Come to the lab early because if you wait till the last day it is due, the lab will be full. You have two weeks to complete each lab. Keep in mind that D2L goes down for maintenance too so don't wait till the last minute.
  3. Although you work in pairs, you submit your work individually. If you did the work and only your partner submits it then you will not get credit for it.
  4. Visit the lab frequently to ask questions, practice conversation or get feedback on your written language skills. Even though a specific lab assistant is assigned to your particular class section, any of the lab assistants for your language are able to help you and answer your general questions!

In coordination with the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the Department of Modern Languages, the Language Lab offers the WebCape 2.0 Language Placement Test to help students determine their language proficiency and place them in a class that is most appropriate to their level. This assessment is available for Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian and Chinese and can be taken in any of our labs on a walk-in basis during working hours. In addition to the written test, students are also interviewed in-language by faculty in order to help determine their appropriate level so that they may coordinate with their advisors in registering for classes.

For more information about the placement test, please contact the language lab coordinator for your campus.

This is a wonderful resource to accompany your language learning experience.  To access it you have to be in one of our language labs but it is free to any student using the lab.
