[Lily Herndon, Business Marketing] - So my name is Lily. I am a sophomore business marketing major on the Dahlonega Campus. I chose ǧÃŬAV because I really liked the small-school aspect of it. The class sizes are really small, so you're able to kind of have those connections with your professors and the students in your class. It's very community-based here at ǧÃŬAV. You see the same people all the time, which is really great. It's really easy to make friends and get involved here, so I really like that part of it.

I would say the biggest adjustment that I had to get used to coming to college was just learning how to kind of do things on my own without my parents and without the structure of having someone telling me when I need to be somewhere. It was really nice to kind of learn that independence, though, and I think that you grow a lot that way. So my major was early childhood and special education, which I love children. So I definitely think that would have been a good fit for me, but I overall just wasn't really feeling peace about it. And I think to be a teacher, you really have to have a passion for that, and I didn't really feel like that personally. But with marketing, I really enjoy the people aspect of it. You can really connect with consumers, and in the business world you can meet so many people that way. And I think that's really what drew me to it. So that's kind of what led me to change my major.

So the PROS program here at ǧÃŬAV has really helped me a lot as a business student. We do things like mock interviews, resumeés, cover letters. And your teachers can look over them, give you corrections and edits. I think this is really going to help me in the future when I do have those interviews and have to write professional essays and cover letters. I really think it prepares you well for the real world, and you're able to get that feedback while you're in school so that when you graduate you're able to kind of have that level of professionalism already that you kind of gained while you're at school. I have absolutely loved working on campus. You're able to meet so many people that way. I've met so many other student workers and actually gained a lot of friends that way as well. It's also very convenient. I lived on campus my freshman and sophomore year and was able to walk when I went to work, which is really nice as well. I really love the environment here at ǧÃŬAV. The people that I work for, the offices I work for really put students first. They understand our time and the fact that we are students before we are workers, which is really, really great. They're very generous with giving us time to study if we need it and things like that.

Advice that I would give to a new freshman, I would say just put yourself out there, don't be afraid to try new things, College really is what you make it. If you want to get involved, you have to put yourself out there and force yourself to do that if you want to make friends, you kind of have to go out there and meet people. So I would say stepping out of your comfort zone, even if it is really scary, and just trying new things, saying yes to a lot of new things, especially that first week and that first month that you're at school. I'd say just going out there and trying a bunch of new stuff.
