What to Bring

Below is a comprehensive, suggested packing list to help you prepare for camp. Do you need everything on this list? No, you don’t. However, there is a use for each item listed.

  • Clothes for academics, outdoor/athletic activities, dormwear, and active swimwear.
  • Bedding (sleeping bag or sheets and comforter), pillow, towels, toiletries. Beds are standard twin size. An extra blanket and/or warm PJs may be helpful as the air conditioning works quite well.
  • Basic school day supplies such as a scientific calculator, pens, pencils, notebook, paper, backpack, etc.
  • Large, refillable water bottle.
  • Sunglasses, caps/visors, bug spray, sunscreen.
  • Laundry supplies. You will need detergent and dryer sheets, but the dorm washers and dryers are free.
  • Personal electronics are allowed including tablets, laptops and speakers for iPod's or MP3 players. However, the University of North Georgia and the Summer Honors Program are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal items.
  • Spending money for trips to Dairy Queen, the university gift shop and for souvenirs on the historic Dahlonega Square. Around $100 is suggested, but either more or less is fine.
  • $20 cash or check for a security deposit. Your $20 deposit will be returned in full provided you return your key card and no damage is caused to the dorm room or facilities during your stay.

Clothes Needed

Academic

Academic wear should be classy casual. The official dress code for academic sessions is pants or nice jeans, capris, or skirts, with nice/dressy shirts/tops. Students will wear this attire for academic courses most mornings of camp. Most students choose to dress in nicer attire for the awards banquet as well.

Activity

Activity wear should include closed-toe shoes and comfortable, athletic-type clothes. T-shirts or tanks with athletic-type shorts suggested - keep in mind that longer shorts (4 in or longer) are more comfortable with climbing harnesses. You will need active wear for climbing, hiking, playing games on campus, and wildlife conservation activities. Please bring active swimwear to tube the Etowah River. You will have the opportunity to tube a short section of the Etowah River if you so desire.

Dorm

Dorm wear should include clothes for common areas in the dorms. Male and female campers will be housed on separate halls but will share lounge spaces. During quiet hours and free time, camp staff will patrol the hallway areas to ensure campers are in designated areas or rooms. Counselors will only enter a camper’s dorm room or restroom in an emergency. Suggestion: bring sweatshirt and sweatpants. The dorm AC works well, sometimes a bit too well.

What Not to Bring

The University of North Georgia and the Summer Honors Program are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal items. Please do not bring valuable or fragile items such as expensive jewelry.

The following items are specifically prohibited:

  • Refrigerators
  • Televisions/stereos
  • Electronic game systems (X-Box, etc)
  • Possession of alcohol, illegal drugs or tobacco products
    • Will result in immediate dismissal from Summer Honors.
