ǧÃŬAV hosts annual math tournament for college students

Calculus, trigonometry, geometry, statistics, and algebra were the name of the game at the 24th University of North Georgia (ǧÃŬAV) Math Tournament April 7 on ǧÃŬAV's Gainesville Campus.

Nearly 150 students from 18 different colleges attended the tournament. The competition is geared for colleges that offer Associate of Science degrees in the area of mathematics.

During the all-day competition, individuals competed in the morning as they vied for the highest score of a calculus test consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions. In the afternoon, the students participated in a four-member team competition, which featured timed non-calculus questions.

Winners consisted of individuals and winning teams, who received cash prizes. Winning schools received trophies.

Individual winners were:

  • First: Ji Do Sook, Georgia State University, Perimeter College, Dunwoody
  • Second: Fabian Salinas, Spartanburg Methodist College
  • Third: Tommy Nguyen, Wake Technical Community College
  • Fourth: Hoang Huynh, Georgia State University, Perimeter College, Clarkston
  • Fifth: Hung Tran, Georgia State University, Perimeter College, Clarkston

Team competition winners were:

  • First: Georgia State University, Perimeter College, Dunwoody – Team 1
  • Second: Middle Georgia College – Team 1
  • Third: Georgia State University, Perimeter College, Clarkston – Team 3
  • Fourth: Spartanburg Methodist College – Team 1

Overall school winners were:

  • First: Georgia State University, Perimeter College
  • Second: Spartanburg Methodist College
  • Third: Wake Technical Community College
  • Fourth: Middle Georgia College

ǧÃŬAV will award almost 1,000 degrees and certificates this fall, and more than 600 graduates are scheduled to take part in the Dec. 7 commencement ceremonies.
