Research/Special Interests

Dr. Kurant is currently working on a book manuscript studying the unpublished novels of Mary Boykin Chesnut in relation to her revised Civil War diary.  Her research interests particularly center on New Historicism and depictions of the South and the Civil War.

Publications

Dr. Kurant’s first publication was "The Power of Love: The Education of a Domestic Woman in Mary Boykin Chesnut’s Two Years” in The Southern Literary Journal 2 (Spring 2002). Her subsequent publications are as follows: "The Power of Love: The Education of a Domestic Woman in Mary Boykin Chesnut’s Two Years.”  The Southern Literary Journal 2 (Spring 2002); “The Making of Buck Preston: Mary Boykin Chesnut, Women, and Confederate Memorial Movement.”  The Southern Quarterly 46.4 (Summer 2009); Book Review of Julia A. Stern’s Mary Chesnut’s Civil War Epic. American Nineteenth Century History 12.3; and “Strange Fascination”: Walt Whitman, Imperialism, and the South.” Walt Whitman Quarterly Review 29.2-3 (2012).
